Vegetable Quiche.

Vicki's came up on 36 eggs. So we had to figure out how to get rid of them. Hence, this quiche recipe.

filling:
6 eggs
1 medium potato
1/2 small yellow onion
1 zucchini
1 green onion
1/4 c. milk
1/2 c. grated cheese of your choosing
small handful of fresh sage
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t. ground pepper
1/4 t. cayenne pepper

crust:
for this particular recipe we used a pre-made crust that vicki had. it was from whole foods and it was actually really good. they come in two packs in the frozen section for around $5.

-pre-heat oven to 375 degrees
-cube the potato and boil until firm but cooked, 7 minutes. drain
-sautee yellow onion and zucchini together. until soft. 5 minutes
-in a medium bowl, combine eggs, milk, green onion, cheese, sage and spices
-add potatoes, onion and zucchini
-pour filling mixture into the crust. cook until top is evenly browned, about 45 minutes.
-let set for 20 minutes before slicing.

Tending to the bees.

Erika and Bryon have a bee box on the roof at Ritual. Erika was nice enough to take me up there one day when she was checking on them. They were in the process of integrating two hives together. It's a pretty simple yet amazing process. You stack two boxes of hives on top of each other and separate them by a piece of paper with holes in it. By the time they eat through the paper, they have become one huge family. Erika was checking to see if there were any eggs since they hive had just chosen a new queen. There were none. She found out a few days later that they had killed her, so she is going around to other bee keepers to try to attain a more established queen. Which I hope happens soon, because there have been more than a few renegade hives swarming randomly up and down Valencia Street this month. I blame cell phones.

Hario V-60 training day.

Carmen wants to make herself the best cup of coffee EVER at her house. So she got herself a bunch of adorable shit from the Hario website, and asked me to give her a lesson. After a lot of weighing, grinding and pouring, we finally got a really good cup of coffee. She just texted me saying that she adjusted the grind so that two pours took exactly 90 seconds. That's my girl. I'm so very proud of her.

Friendship Fun Day.

Yesterday, Kate and I had a friendship date. We drank a bunch of coffee at Sub Rosa, ate sandwiches at my house, and then went on a killer bike ride around Lake Merritt (a couple of times). We walked through the botanical gardens, and the bird sanctuary. It was a beautiful day out. We ended our day at Beer Revolution where we got to eavesdrop on some pretty ridiculous conversations. The sun was brutal, so we called it after a few beers. All in all, a very very good day. I'm glad my friend Kate is currently jobless. Random middle of the week hang outs are the best!

My good friend Leopold.

Today I lost one of my faithful goldfish companions. I did what I could to save him, but his time with us was up. Here's to you my Leopold. You will be missed.
